Race in Phantasy Star Online determines a character's abilities, available classes, and appearance. There are three playable races in Phantasy Star Online.

• Humans can be a hunter (HUmar), ranger (RAmar, RAmarl^I&II), or force (FOmar^I&II, FOmarl).
• Newmans can be a hunter (HUnewearl) or force (FOnewm, FOnewearl).
• CAST can be a hunter (HUcast, HUcaseal^I&II) or ranger (RAcast, RAcaseal).
